THE GAP AND WHAT YOU CAN DO

The District is doing everything it can within its own authority to fund these projects responsibly. But closing the gap requires more than grants and loans. It requires community voices. Elected officials at the state and federal level need to hear directly from the people these projects protect, and that’s where you come in.

WRITE A LETTER TO YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS

A personal letter from a constituent is one of the most effective tools in the democratic process. Elected officials hear from lobbyists and advocacy groups every day. A letter from someone who lives, works, farms, or raises a family in Ventura County carries real weight.

Here’s what to include:

Start by introducing yourself briefly. Where do you live? Do you farm, run a business, or rely on local water for your livelihood? Are you a parent, a renter, a homeowner? Your personal connection to this issue matters more than you might think.

Be direct. Tell your representative that you are writing in support of federal funding for United Water Conservation District’s capital infrastructure projects, specifically the Santa Felicia Dam Safety Improvement Project, the Freeman Diversion Improvement Project, and the Extraction Barrier and Brackish Water Treatment Project.

In your own words, describe what these projects mean to your community. Safe drinking water. Protected groundwater. A dam that can withstand an earthquake or a major storm. A river diversion that works for both people and fish. These projects support the infrastructure that makes daily life in central Ventura County possible.

Be specific. Ask your representative to support federal appropriations and expanded grant funding for water infrastructure projects like these, to advocate for maintained or increased funding for WIFIA and State Revolving Fund programs, and to help close the policy gap that leaves privately owned dams like Santa Felicia without access to federal resources that government-owned facilities can access.

Always include your name, address, and a way to reach you. Officials respond to constituents in their district, so this matters.

A thank you. Close by thanking them for their time and expressing your willingness to provide more information if helpful.
